How To Hook MLM Leads Like A Smallmouth Bass

Today, I’m going to ask you to get cozy with a cup of your favorite warm beverage, whether that’s coffee, tea, or anything else.

And, I’m going to tell you a story about how I learned to hook MLM leads like a fisherman hooks Smallmouth Bass.

I want you to imagine a sizzling summer many years ago when I was just a “pup” of a fourteen year old. Here I sit in the blazing sun under an abandoned concrete power dam with a stick, a string, and a hook. I desperately want to fish but there’s a flaw in my plan: I don’t have any bait!

Baitless, I wander around, I look under logs for bugs and I dig through chilled earth for worms. I find nothing…

But you know how I never give up? Well, I never give up. So, in the shadow of an ancient cedar tree I eventually “luck” out. Under that cedar tree there’s a few puddles left from when the water was higher… earlier in the year… I guess? And, in those puddles are a buncha crawdads.

You might be wondering, “Jason, what the hay is a crawdad?”

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, they look like little lobsters. And, when you try to catch them, they skittle backwards and raise their little lobster claws. But, I know they can’t hurt nobody, so I pick three up and put them in my shorts (in the pocket of course) and head over to the end of the dam where the fish are.

I put one poor little crawdad on the hook and toss him in. If there’s a hell, then this is what it would be like, being a crawdad. But, at least it’s a quick hell.

I swear, by everything that’s true, the crawdad doesn’t even hit the water before a bass bites the hook and I swing him on shore. Then I toss another crawdad into the black water and swing another bass on shore. Then the last one and I swing yet another bass on shore. Hard to believe, I know…

I wouldn’t believe it myself if I wasn’t there! Because honestly, I’ve never in all my years had an easier time fishing – never.

But, what made it all work so well wasn’t my stick, my string, or my hook.

It was that silly little lobster on the end of my line.

You see, I didn’t know it at the time, but those mini-lobsters are the favorite food of the Smallmouth Bass. And, the power dam is the favorite place for Smallmouth Bass to chill.

In the past, I’ve fished for days without a bite. I’ve tried shiny little lures, smelly plastic worms, even slimy little frogs – and caught nothing.

The crawdad was the magical little lobster that made it all work

The right bait for the job.

And I hope you understand…

If you want to hook more MLM leads this is soooo much more than a fish story.

It’s a story with a powerful lesson that not one in a thousand Multi-Level Marketers will ever fully understand. Because it’s the real secret of marketing success…

It’s why we’re all really fishermen (and fisherwomen) in this magical world.

Now, I don’t know if this makes sense to you.

But, if you’re that one person that really and truly gets the truth behind this fishing story… If you feel that there’s some truth to this story, any at all, then please share it with your friends today. Twitter, Facebook, BetterNetworker or all three – thank you.

Oh! And don’t be shy to leave a comment today…

Maybe, you’re a fellow fisherman at heart?

To your success,

Its all about the offer right?

I’d rather a nice steak than a crawdad any day but it’s not about me… it all about what I’m fishing for.

Kinda feel like going fishing now…

Thanks J,

Hey Jason,

I’ve never seen a crawdad! Then again I’m from the city. I think all the squirrels will eat them.

This is an awesome post. Have to continually change bait to see what works best. That is why it’s important not to get comfortable with what you started with. There is always a better bait available. I must go now to find that crawdad!

Chat with you later…

Hey Jason Nice story about the crawdads, lobsters. I learn two things from it one is persistence is the key coz one should never give up as one learns more and more from failures and secondly ofcourse you should offer crawdads to the people which means value that’s why they follow you. Thanks for the post.

Hey Jason,
Reminds me of a quote in a training video when I just started my business, “bait the hook to suit the fish”. I think it might have originated by something written by Dale Carnegie.

Of course, you have to know what fish you’re looking to catch and choose your bait… or just take whatever fish does come along :)

Have a great day

[Reply]

Jason Reply:

It’s hard to tell where that originated but it’s solid advice.

Carnegie did say it.

Robert Collier said it.

Gosh, it’s probably in the Bible somewhere too.

Ancient wisdom.

Hey Jason,

Both small and large mouth bass like minnows, I was fishing in a favorite spot, below a dam that forms a lake.

I would hook 3 fish out 4 casts, then I ran out of bait. i looked around and found some silver colored Willow leaves.

The turbulence of the water made those leaves dance like a minnow. The bass kept bitting.

I finally left when my arms started getting tired from reeling them in.

My point is, if your bait looks good, something will bite.

Mike

Jason Reply:

I don’t know what it is about dams…

Bass love them.

Fond memories.

[Reply]

Michael Cole Reply:

I think there is a “sweet spot” where the two forces of water meet, from over the the top of the dam and the right angle crash from the bypass valve.

They’re naturally attracted to the constant activity, always there but never quite the same.

Drawing them back the chaotic tumbling, looking for tidbits to nibble on.

And when you’re offering what they want…

Kerie Cooper  on April 29th, 2010

:) Hi Jason, I completely get your point here. It’s not enough to be where the fish are, you have to have the right kind of bait (value) to offer them in order to reel ‘em in. Very nice analogy!

You just gave away a piece of your hidden identity. Crawdad is a southern term. Probably Texas. Tim Erway may be right about you. (see Mitchel Dillman)

I totally agree. Sometimes everything is right but the bait. People go out and buy new boats, new poles, the latest and greatest gimmicks…

All they need is to find the crawdad in the mud puddle.

I’m working on a reactor today. Maybe I will go after some glowing bass when I’m done.lol

Excellent post and written very visually. I saw the whole episode happening. Careful, Hollywood might be knocking on your door. Lead with value (bait in this case) and know your your prospect (Smallmouth Bass)and if you find enough Crawdads sell them to a French or Creole restaurant.

This is great, Jason…

And one of the greatest baits is US (as you’ve talked about in earlier posts). If we’re using our company as the main bait, people won’t be nearly as likely to want to bite… we need to expose ourselves… that’s what people want and that’s what they’re drawn to.

BTW, I don’t mean ‘expose ourselves’ literally :) .

Now lately Jason, instead of listening to the radio or my old worn out collection of CD’s, I’m filling my noodle with positive mindset stuff…You know, Good Stuff In = Good Stuff Out…Anyhow,

…I’m sitting at a traffic light, listening to an old Tom Hopkins training series I still have from years gone by, when all of a sudden, while watching all the people going by, it occurs to me…

…We’re all just like a bunch of fish swimming around in big aquarium…And, marketing is just like when I was a kid, fishing for those delicious Rainbow trout…Ya gotta have the right fly on the end of your line!

I’m not kidding…What’s up with this?

Marketing…Fishing…? Hmm…

Have you somehow reached into my sub-conscience mind and started pre-programming my thoughts?

I mean, Really…What kind of a caricature are you Jason? This is scary stuff man…I mean it!

Do you possess unearthly powers of some sort?

Or, Are you really conducting some kind of wacky, weird, marketing experiment on each of your followers?

For crying out loud Jason…For the sake of all the young, up and coming whippersnapper Networkers, and for the love of all that is descent in MLM, just let me go on with my life…

Please just let me stand here and fish in peace, Would ya? Please! ;-)

Thanks for this post Jason.

Now, Have a GREAT weekend my fellow, fisher of men. and women…

The fishing analogy is what really allowed me to understand marketing, ESPECIALLY online.

Bait is critical. You need super bait. Making sure that you have an irresistible offer is critical to attracting not only the right people but making sure they come back for more!

Mark

[Reply]

Jason Reply:

You just brought up a memory too.

Without the right bait you’re basically “snagging”.

I used to hear of old-timers “snagging” fish in the rivers.

They would basically toss a bunch of lines with hooks and injure the fish to catch them.

It was highly unethical (and I believe it’s illegal now) but that seems to be how some people hook their prospects.

Instead of digging for the right bait.

[Reply]

Rhonda Miller  on April 29th, 2010

Oh man, I sooooo related to this post. We used to play with crawdads in the creek (or crick as some would call it) when I was little. Going wading in the creek (or crick) was a blast.

I have to confess, we live on a really small lake, and my husband and I snuck down yesterday for about 1 1/2 hours to fish. My husband teases me about my little bluegill I catch and I just told him to never you mind b/c I’m catching fish for my mother-in-law (Yes, I actually love my mom-in-law). We catch em and she comes and gets em.

Anywho, onto the moral of the story, I get it. You have to have the right bait to attract the right fish. We need to be the crawdad that is dangling magnetic crawdads in front of the “big” bass:)

Great post. Brought back some really cool memories.

Have a great day,

And yes, I do get it (LOL), although I must say that it took me a little while when I was starting out.

But now that I DO get it, I also realize that you have to choose the right spot to fish in (whether it be Google PPC, Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

Then you figure out the best bait for that particular “fishing hole”…

Then you’ve gotta have a good place to let the fish “hang out”…

And on and on it goes, my friend.

Jason, this is a very informative and fun post! Part of the challenge for me when I go fishing is figuring out which lure/bait that the fish will bit. Sometimes when I can’t figure it out…I blame it on the location and change my spot.

What I learned is that after I moved to another location, and stayed long enough to find out what the fish were biting, I could return to my original spot and use the bait from the second location and the fish would bite!

Long (fish) story short, it wasn’t the location, I was simply using the wrong bait.

Next week, how to catch fresh water brim using earth worms!

Great post Jason!

Hey Jason,

A great analogy for something that is so important. I would like to add one little thing to your post if I may. Although you caught several bass with the right bait, was every bass you caught good tasting? In other words, although you could have the right product or service, not every mlm lead that you hook in will produce or be the leader you’re looking for.

Do I make sense? :)
