7 “Musts” For Network Marketers

I was listening to Todd Falcone’s interview over at Better Networker last night and it inspired me to write my own list of “musts” for Network Marketers. Here they are…

#1 – You MUST Focus Like A Laser Guided Missile

If you try to recruit everybody you will probably recruit nobody.

Yeppers, I know you hear this advice everywhere these days, but this is probably the single most important (and sadly overlooked) skill in business.

#2 – You MUST Know Something Almost Nobody Else Knows

If you need open heart surgery, you’re not going to get it done at the local meat market. You want somebody who actually knows what they are doing. Somebody with a steady hand, a sharp scalpel, and a brain. Network Marketing isn’t all that different.

#3 – You MUST Have A “Eureka!” Moment

In a highly competitive niche like Network Marketing the only thing that sets people apart is a “big idea”. Nobody will give you big ideas, because they aren’t for sale, but you can think up your own. And honestly, it’s the hardest work you’ll ever do – so get cracking.

#4 – You MUST Have More Personality Than A Block Of Cheese

Why do you read some e-mails but delete others? In some cases, it has nothing to do with tips, tricks, or secrets, but personality. You open the door for “Uncle Bob”. You SLAM the door on “Aunt Helga”. It’s something to think about.

#5 You MUST Learn To Solve Your Own “Freakin’” Problems

I hate to say it, but there’s no hope for some people…

- When a door is closed they refuse to turn the doorknob.
- When an elevator breaks down they refuse to take the stairs.
- When a tree falls on the sidewalk they refuse to walk around it.

Because, believe it or not, some people are stuck in 3rd grade and they’re still waiting for their teacher or mommy to solve all of their problems and make the “Boogey man” go away Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t work like that.

And last but not least…

#6 – You MUST Totally Ignore What “Joe Blow” Is Doing

The average “Joe Blow” is not making any money at all in business…

So, this is the easiest tip of them all, watch what everybody else is doing and do the complete opposite – easy beasy.

#7 – You MUST comment on this post and share it with your friends…

Kidding, but that would be totally cool of you.

Ha, great list J

Interesting to live up to but great nevertheless!!

I find the more I work in my business the more I learn the more I can offer and the more ideas I have. Which means my “big idea” is right around the corner!!

Problem solving, is a great one, this way you don’t rely on people to solve it for you (holding you up).

Have A Great Day

I always liked the David Ogilvy quote:

Highly recommend anything by David Ogilvy. His books are dirt cheap and out-of-print usually… but rocking with ideas.

Hey J,

Its true what you say in Tip 2 there: “You MUST Know Something Almost Nobody Else Knows”

Every now and then an over night star is born online, and I wonder how did that happen!?

9 times out of 10 that person had a great success story or a skill that everyone else over looked.

Great offering of tips there.

Hi Jason!

Love number 4 and 6 (what happened to 5?)

Some people have the persoanlity that just makes your eyes want to roll in the back of your head when they speak. I’ve fallen asleep on many webinars, even while sitting at my desk.

While sometimes we need a little point in the right direction, if you can’t do it yourself without someone holding your hand all of the way, then just don’t do it! I don’t mind helping people, I need some help sometimes too, but I’m not going to do it for them!

Have a great day!

Hey J and the “Better” Bunch,

I am a member of my community’s Chamber of Commerce for my primary business. There was a networking event two weeks ago and we discussed our problems with our business and what we can do to improve it.

I started talking about the different ways to “attract” customers thinking outside the box.
Now, it relates to your post and also yesterday’s post. They all think I specialize in just my business, not realizing how much I know about attraction marketing, so they were like glued to my words.

I used an example for a woman who is a real estate agent, builder and works with a guy who owns the construction company.

I told them instead of advertising your business with a “Free Estimate” like EVERY SINGLE BUSINESS DOES in the directory,

I told them to come up with a special report about…
the pros and cons of building “green”

or

What you DIDN’T know about your septic system, you know something completely different than the norm.

My point is I was able to cover the first six points you made in your post to a group of people that were all thinking like a block of cheese. They were used to the same thing and were getting by because of customer loyalty. I told them to change things up and find something that may be able to attract someone new. Someone that is looking, yet can’t seem to see past the same ad over and over. Right?

That is why I decided to really concentrate on video marketing. Yes, I will write articles and blog, but will cut, edit and release a video with every one. I do not see alot of videos out there for my primary business and feel I can really take advantage of recruiting using this strategy.

Kind of in a rush to write this, sitting under a rock with my netbook, lol.

Oh yeah, now I am covering #7 too :)

Have a great day everyone!

Just remember to “think inside the box” when everybody is “thinking outside the box” and vice versa. :-)

You reminded me that Network Marketers who spend time developing their Internet Marketing skills are miles ahead of the average business owner.

I’m amazed by how little most people know about marketing their businesses.

It’s even scary when you look at how little advertising agencies know about advertising. :-(

I would agree with most of what you say, except about “knowing what almost no one else knows.” I think many of us know much more than we think, and many times it is comparable. But it is the dedication and the unfettered action we take on that knowledge that separates the “have done’s” from the “have done nothing’s”. And on having more personality than a block of cheese?! You ever try Limburger? That is a cheese you cannot forget…well maybe this is a poor example! ;)

Jason,

I just lost a great guy I was mentoring due to #6. Joe blow enticed him over the weekend with his fancy bank account. I was training this guy on how to build and Internet Network Marketing empire, and he was well on his way.

Now he’s back to the streets wearing mlm buttons and handing out fliers and cd’s to Aunt Helga. I am trying not to take it personally.

Apparently, He just doesn’t get it.

Not only did he just take the easy was out, it’s like saying I’d rather make $5/hr rather than $500hr. He also just stopped learning.

Have a great afternoon, and thanks for letting me vent.

Hi jason

Great tips… couldn’t agree more on the eureka moment. With that said i think the worst thing some one could do after reading that is stop everything there doing and just think endlessly to have that eureka moment. I think everything needs a process as soon as you just stop and try to come up with a big idea your trying to skip the process that you need to go through.

great ideas always come about when the wheels are in motion

Adam Haider  on March 30th, 2010

Jason it’s as if you know me.. :-)

All the above “musts” you mentioned are exactly what I practice and strongly believe every needs to adhere to if they want to see any growth in their business.

#2 is something very few people understand yet a very powerful thing have. I’ve spoken about it before in one of my articles, the fact that by simply obtaining a peice of information knowbody else has heard gives you the upper-hand and automatically makes you appear as a leader and someone of value. (Take a look at some videos of top industry leaders and see how many times they quote and reference things they may have read or heard)

#5 is also something I had to learn on my own. At 22 I’ve had to battle with so many problems being so young in a well-established industry in order to grow and mature. My best advise to people regarding this, is wake up and smell the coffee..

It’s only the individual themselves who will build their business not anyone else and so the only way to become (truly) successful in life is to break-through your barriers stopping you from achieving things without thinking twice and just GO FOR IT!!—You will be better off having tried than to never have tried at all.. :-)
