How A Ninja Picks Keywords For Network Marketing SEO

Today, I have a sneaky little ninja tip I almost didn’t want to give away. Because it’s probably the easiest way to pick MLM SEO Keywords.

THE BEST PART: You don’t need to subscribe to (or pay for) fancy schmancy SEO Keyword picking software…

Now, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with programs and websites that help you pick Keywords. I’m all for them.

But, if you’re marketing on a shoestring budget this tip will really hit the spot…

Here’s the Sneaky Ninja Way To Pick Your MLM SEO Keywords:

  1. Find the top SEO Friendly Websites In Your Niche.
  2. Borrow their SEO Keywords (for research purposes).
  3. Turn their SEO Keywords into “longtail” keywords.
  4. Start using your new “longtail” keywords in your posts.

Here’s What I Mean:

“MLM” is a really short and highly competitive keyword.

I Googled “MLM” about 20,900,000 results showed-up – ouch.

However, “MLM SEO Tips” is longer (what would be considered a “longtail” keyword) and not as competitive. When I Googled it 344,000 results appeared.

Which means, it’s WAAAYYY easier to rank for than just “MLM”.

SIDE NOTE: Unfortunately “MLM SEO Tips” low in search traffic too. Which is something I definitely should have checked before I used it in several blog posts. BUT, what’s a Jason Better post without a mistake, right?

QUICK FIX: You can actually double check keywords by visiting Google’s Keyword tool. You just type them and Google fetches the search results – easy beasy.

The best way to use this trick is to make your longtail keyword more specific than the keywords you “borrowed”.

So “MLM Tips” becomes “MLM Recruiting Tips”, “MLM Recruiting Tips”, and so on.

Now, this isn’t the only way to pick keywords and it’s not the best way. In fact, it’s more like the Do-It-Yourself duct-tape version. But it works.

If you enjoyed this post please give it some Twitter love.

Thank you.

To your success,

Is that to offensive?

I guess it depends on how the first paragraph is handled?

Headlines with a sexual element in them tend to pull but they also tend to offend. ;-)

Jason,

Great post bro..

This is definitely the “duct-tape” “DIY” version of keyword research, but some may argue that it’s the best way.

I mean why would you trust a ROBOT to do it for you? :D

But yea, making the keywords long-tail will ease the pain of ranking well in the SERPs.

Extra “Fortune Cookie” Tip: Once you start getting traffic from the search engines, you’ll start ranking for keyword you Weren’t EVEN going after.. ..so you take advantage of that situation and start building links with the proper “anchor-text” to get even more search engine juice..

Really enjoy your stuff J,
Have a great day,
Hector Cuevas

Hello Ken,

Long tail keywords are the ticket. Have you herd of commercial valuable keywords? Basically its the difference between someone searching for something free to read, versus a product/service to buy.

Which one do you think you want to focus on more?

Even better are the keywords that are producing TRAFFIC for them.

It’s one thing to rank in the top 10 for a keyword, but to do so and get traffic from it is completely another.

Some sights where you can “snoop” on what keywords are producing organic traffic for your competition are: Alexa.com, Spyfu.com, Compete.com among a couple of others.

I’m not talking about the paid versions of these, you can get good data from just putting a competitors URL in the free version, and see what keywords are producing RESULTS for them.

Here is my quick fancy schmancy Keyword tool analysis. You knew it was coming.

Keyword:MLM, Worth about 80k for top spot per day.
1k for Top ad spot per day
60k searches per day for “MLM”
25K estimated max daily clicks for top spot.
1 million pages have MLM in the Title.

Lets long tail it

“MLM SEO tips”
0 searches per day(not enough to show data)
58k pages have the key phrase
Top spot: JasonBetter.
JasonBetter currently has 1760 backlinks from outside sources.
188 pages indexed with google.
Not listed in DMOZ or Yahoo.(very good places to be listed)

This was just a 5 minutes anylsis with the tool I use. This tool gives me everything I need to know about the keyword and if its worth going after or not.

I am no expert by any means. Many people have dominated keywords using nothing but blood sweat and tears.

Another good tip I learned from TF 2 was if no one is advertising for that keyword it might be to broad of a term.

Keep up the good work everyone!

I am glad you said that it’s a “duct tape” version, Jason.

While it can certainly give you an idea and a good starting point, your research should not end there.

Just because someone else uses those keywords, does not mean that they are profitable.

The 2 key questions to ask when researching your keywords are:

1. How BIG is your audience? and

2. How HUNGRY are they for your product/service?

In other words, how many people are there in your market and how willing are they to buy?

I won’t make this comment into a post:), however I did write a post on it at my blog:
Internet Marketing 101: The Telltale Signs of Profitable Markets

There I explain how to research these 2 key factors:

1. Traffic Levels – How many potential customers are there in this market? and

2. Visitor Values – What is each one of these potential customers worth?

Hope this helps!

Ana

David Wilcoxson  on May 12th, 2010

Hey Jason,

Now that these blogs posted have been published, there’s probably been a lot of recent searches for “MLM SEO Tips”. Of course, the searchers are people from your web site :-P

The challenge of using the Google tool is that you need to continue to do your research.

A long-tail keyword may look good, but if too many people have that term in their URLs, in the title of their web pages, and in anchor text links, then it may be a challenge to get ranked.

Before you spend a lot of effort on a particular keyword phrase, find out the strength of your competition.

[Reply]

Richard Kaulfers Reply:

David,

You are right on the money with that. I have learned so much in the past 3 days about keyword research its leaking out my ears.

Now when I finally calm down Ill spread the wealth of information I learned.

The question is beating your competition in the content creating area. I guess that depends on your keywords and market your after.

It pays to take time to research. One thing I learned is that it takes just as much time to build a bad company as it does to build a good company.

We must become investigators!

Thank you David.

I’ve been keeping my eye on what keywords some of the Better Bunch bloggers have been going after, myself.

Guys like Wayne Vassell, Jerome Ratliff, and Josh Garcia — they’re always “sneaking” some keywords in their titles and posts…

Then, I leave a comment on their post, and…

SHABAMO — I “siphon” some of their traffic.

They do the same to me, so I guess I don’t feel too bad (LOL)
