How To Use Photos In Network Marketing Advertising
Hey, thanks for dropping in. This post is a monster, which is only fitting with Halloween around the bend. You know, it started out as a checklist but before I knew what was happening I wrote a novel…
But here’s the good news… it tells you just about everything you need to know about using photos on your blogs or marketing collateral of any kind. Think of it like a primer for advertising with pictures. It’s loaded.
Here we go…
How To Use Photos In Network Marketing. A Primer By Jason Better
Photos trump illustrations. This is an old truth, but a solid one. If you have a choice between photos or drawings then you’re safer with photos. But, think this over before you act. It might be worth the contrast if nobody else is using illustration at all.
Make pictures float. The best place for a picture in any ad at all is above the headline and text. The second best place is right beside the first sentence. Pictures should make reading easier not harder.
Captions. This is probably the most overlooked advertising space online. Everybody posts pictures but few use the caption space underneath. Yeah, I know I’m guilty. What can I say?
Men look at men. I know this sounds funny, but some old tests have found that men like to look at pictures of men before pictures of women. And women strangely enough like to look at pictures of women.
I don’t know why this is. But it’s an important thing to keep in mind on your websites if you know your target market.
Models. Keeping the above in mind, In a mixed market of men and women, a picture of a pretty “girl next door” would probably be your best bet. Why? Because you’d be grabbing both markets at once.
Show the product in use. If you have a product or service that’s easy to photograph then by all means… show it in use. It’s one good way to demonstrate your product or service without actually being there.
The rule of three. Your picture, headline, and opening sentence should all be working to get your readers to read your ad. If all three are in agreement then you your readership will go up. Common sense, but hard to implement.
Bio pics. If you’re a handsome guy or gal then consider posting your picture on your blog or marketing collateral. This builds trust. It’s the personal element that’s often missing online.
Celebrity. I know you’re probably laughing at this one but I don’t necessarily mean that you should hire Oprah to promote your product. If you know someone who is generally known in your marketplace then you might consider partnering with them for added credibility. Their face could make all the difference.
Credibility. That raises a whole new use for photos. Building credibility. If you have your own pictures of friends or acquaintances in good social standing in your community then you could get permission to use these on your sites.
If you live in a nice part of town. If you happen to have a really nice home or car then why not share it? Some people take this a bit too far. They rent or “borrow” homes or cars. They go on one cruise in their lifetime then use the pics to build their image for years. But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from them.
Don’t be a scammer… but by all means… do share a few of the personal elements that make your life worth living.

Public Domain. If you don’t have any spare change then you’ll be stuck with public domain pictures. But don’t worry… there’s hundreds of them online if you spend a bit of time looking.
Government. A little known fact is that pictures taken by government, military or other officials are often considered to be public domain. This means that there’s a load of professional quality pictures available to you if you know where to look. There are exceptions to this rule… so tread with care.
Gnu. General Public License. It’s basically a form of free use agreement that some stock photo sites use. You’re often allowed to use professional quality pics as long as you give credit or allow others to use your creations if you change the picture in any way. There’s a surprising amount of free photos out there under this license.
Google Commercial Re-use. Did you know, you can even do an image search on Google and change the search settings so you only turn up pics labeled for commercial re-use? Wow. This is a huge underutilized resource for bloggers.
Stock Photography. I can’t recommend this highly enough. Yes, they can be expensive but there’s a few sites out there that offer web quality pics for under a buck a piece.
The good news… If you buy credits in bulk they often give a bigger discount. The big thing is they save you hours of work. And when it comes down to it… you’re worth more than a buck an hour. So cough up the change, buy a picture and spend the rest of your time making money.
Your camera. If you’re pressed for cash or just want that added personal touch then it’s hard to beat taking your own pics. I even know a few people who love this part of blogging. Photography is like a hobby for them.
And no doubt there’s a lot more places to get great pics for your marketing… but whew… I’m a bit tapped out.
So I think I’m gonna head out and grab a bite to eat.
Till tomorrow.
