Marketing Psychology Secret Almost Forces Men And Women To Like You — The Zajonc Effect.

Robert Zajonc

Robert Zajonc

This would be the easiest way to win the hearts, minds and wallets of even the most skeptical strangers but it’s not the fastest.

You could call it a secret technique. A method of earning trust so obvious that it slips under almost everybody’s radar day in and out. You might be wondering if such a thing could even exist. If there really is a way to get past the cold-calls, slammed doors and annoyed strangers.

You might be wondering if there really is a way to almost force people to like you without them even knowing what’s happening.

Well, as incredible as this sounds… it does exist. And if you’ll read on you’ll find that it makes complete sense too. You’ll have one of those “Aha!” moments… and you’ll be able to apply this insight right away, today, to build your downline faster than ever before.

But enough teasing. Because you’re gonna slap yourself in the head once you see how obvious this is.

You could call it the “Zajonc Effect”

You could call it the “Zajonc Effect” because it was discovered and studied by Robert Zajonc in the sixties. It’s also known as the “Exposure Effect”. Sometimes called The “Familiarity Principle”.

You could summarize it by saying:
The more often someone bumps into you, the more they like you. Now, before you dismiss this as hokey-pokey table-top psychology know that it’s supported by experimental evidence. And yes, there are exceptions.

But since people generally buy from people they like and trust this is no small tip. In truth, this is one of the most powerful and subtle psychological triggers you will ever discover.

Some studies have shown that this effect is strongest when exposure is repeated more than ten times as long as it’s very brief. So this has serious implications for marketing in general. It does mean, that you should not be afraid to contact a prospect a half dozen times and keep at it as long as you’re brief and useful to them.

With one strong caution. It’s also been found that repeat exposure to a person or object we dislike can make us hate them even more! So first impressions are as important as ever.

Another interesting fact, is how it fades over time with over-exposure. But in most cases this is never a problem. Almost nobody contacts their customers enough to even come close to over-exposure. And with the fall-off rate on subscriber lists the chances are almost nobody will be overexposed to your messages before life gets to them first.

Trust me. YOU are not over-exposing YOUR prospects.

Still, it’s interesting to note that studies in 1976 showed people reacted negatively to posters after they had been exposed 200 times. In fact, the started to rebel against the message!

But enough with the research!
How can you use this tool to build your downline. Make more money and enjoy the life you deserve?

What it boils down to is this.
You expose your prospect(s) to you as briefly and frequently as possible. 15-20 times would be ideal. And you don’t even have to do or say anything important at all. The exposure itself is responsible for this effect. It makes people like you and even trust you almost automatically within a few guidelines of course. It’s not without flaws. It takes time but it’s easy to do.

Now, it’s much easier than you probably think. One way of doing this is the ever popular mailing list. But remember, you don’t have to sell anything at all for this principle to work. You just have to be there. As long as you leave a moderately pleasant impression you’re doing great.

Now, contrary to popular opinion you don’t have to sell anything to these people on the spot. Your job is simply to “expose” them to you. Selling will come later when they get to know you and see that you’re actually a pretty cool cat. Then you start selling.

The Zajonc Effect doesn’t turn people into zombies. It simply opens them up for first sale… unless you abuse this trust… then you get zippo and lose out on all the repeat sales.

So like anything else, honesty is a huge asset here and I wouldn’t feel good sharing this mind magnet if it would be abused anyway.

If you take the time to think about it, you’ll see how powerful this effect really is and use it carefully. It’s not the fastest way to get sales but it must be pretty close to being the easiest.

And It works.

This makes total sense, and seems to be completely in sync with the idea of self-branding. Thanks
for the post. It always helps to hear things more than once, and coming from slightly different angles.

Be well,
Peter

Hey Rebecca,

I’m excited to see you back here again. :-)

I’m sure we’ve all tried the hard approach at
some point in our lives. And it’s amazing how far
a person can get by simply being a decent
human being instead of a shark.

I’m glad you liked it.
