More Traffic For Your Nerve Center or Blog With The ‘More Tag’
Hey, I was reading through my comments last week and there was a really great question I think you’ll appreciate if you’re a blogger. It’s really something that’s easy to do… but it increases the number of page views you get. Which of course leads to more comments and “retweets” on your blog posts. And as long as you’re using keywords in your headlines this will also help your SEO.
What’s more, it will make it easier for your readers to see what your blog is all about. It’s almost like giving them a box of chocolates when they discover your blog.
Mitchell Dillman asked:
“I’ve noticed on many blogs that the articles are listed as an out-take, then when you click on the ‘continue’ text it takes you over to the entire article. Is this an add-on or widget device as well? If so, what is it called and does it install much the same way?”
Well, thanks for asking Mitchell.
It’s called the “more tag” and I’ll tell you all about it today.
Of course, I’m gonna assume you’re using Wordpress for your blogging platform. I think you would have to be crazy to use anything else these days. After all, it doesn’t cost you anything at all.
What Is The More Tag?
The “More tag” is just a bit of HTML code in Wordpress that cuts-off the content of your posts and hides it until someone clicks on the “read more” or “continued” link. It helps you fit more posts on to the first page of your Wordpress blog. Which means, new readers are going to see more of your posts… and the Google monkeys are gonna love you too.
I took a screenshot of what a front page post using the “More tag” looks like but you can just as easily see it in action by visiting the homepage of my blog right here.

Above: The “More tag” in action. You see that little red arrow? Well that’s where my blog post cuts-off. You can click “Read more” to see the full post or go on to the next article. It’s almost like giving your reader a little taste of your posts before they read them.
Where To Find The More Tag Button:
You can find the more button right beside the bold, italics, and other buttons on your blog text editor in Wordpress. Of course, you have to be logged-in to see that in the first place. I tend to work in the “HTML” button instead of “Visual” so if you’re having any trouble matching my pictures that might be what’s happening.
It looks like the buttons below… but for some reason my picture keeps on getting cut off. It actually says “More” on it. So it’s easy to spot. The main problem being that it looks like all the other gray buttons in Worpress.

How To Use More Tag:
Basically, all you do is click the “More” button and it adds a little bit of code to your post. It’s really that easy. Anything under this piece of code will be tucked away until your readers click your link. All sneaky like.
![]()
But, what a lot of people don’t know (and I didn’t know until recently) is that you can actually control what the “More tag” says. You’re gonna love this…
How To Customize Your More Tag
I really have no idea how to describe this… so I took even more pictures. Essentially, you just click the “More” button and then you type what you want it to say. It should look something like my picture below… but you can write whatever you want.
![]()
Again for good measure…
You click the more button which brings up this code.
![]()
And it appears wherever you were typing at the time in your Wordpress post.
Then you edit it so it looks somewhat like our second picture. It’s easier to do than it is to describe. Then all you have to do is publish your post and test it by visiting your home page.
![]()
The only problem I have, and you probably won’t, is that I tend to forget to use the “More” tag occasionally and have to edit my post later. So it always helps to check your posts after you publish them. You would be surprised by what you miss from time to time.
Wrap up…
I know this is a simple bit of blogging advice but I didn’t even know what a “more tag” was four months ago and I figured there must be some network marketers and bloggers who are in the same boat today. With that said, I hope that you found this post useful and if you did I would like to hear your thoughts below.
Oh, and if you have any suggestions for future posts or “how to” articles, please let me know. I’m always looking for new ideas and I post about five times a week.
Thank you,
Jason The “Better Networker”

Finally have my blog up and running with Thesis. I’ll need to help to make it as cool as yours! I appreciate the customizing tip for the more button. Here’s a new question… How do you take images of your web pages for this post? Ive been like a sponge for new info. 30 days ago I didn’t know what FTP meant….I thought it was an oil additive… like STP!!!

@Ken
Hey Ken, thanks.
Actually I have a little application on my macbook
called “grab” it lets me make a selection or take a full
screenshot as a .tiff then I convert it to a .jpg
There’s probably way easier ways to do this on a PC
but I haven’t looked into it. I know that’s probably not
a huge help… but that’s how I do it.

Hi Jason, thanks for the reminder. You say at the beginning of the article:
“as long as you’re using keywords in your headlines this will also help your SEO”
Could you explain quickly why it will help with SEO?
Thanks

@Perig
Hey, thanks for dropping in. Although I’m no
search engine guru like Raymond Fong or Ferny
Ceballos. It’s my understanding that the more page
views and hits as well as links your site gets will
help improve your Google page rank too.
Maybe I’m off on this theory, but lining up ten posts
with keywords in the titles seems to be one of the major
SEO benefits here. As well as the increased traffic and time
spent on your blog… which helps the Alexa rating too.
Just thoughts. Let me know if you think my logic here is
sound. It might not be, but I’m open to learning from
you. Very cool of you to stop in.

Hey Jason,
I’ve been using the all the time, but never knew I could customize the wording on it….so cool!
Here are two Wordpress plugins that might help you out. They will automatically place the for your posts so you don’t have to do it yourself. They are also highly customizable.
1. Evermore: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/evermore/
2. Post Teaser: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/post-teaser/
Enjoy…

Really cool Hani. I think people
would find these links handy.
I didn’t know I could customize it until
recently either. That’s why I thought it would
be cool to share this.

Well Jason, this made me smile…
By the way, last week, after you showed me how to implement this little trick, I did…and your Twitter plug-in ads a cool touch too. Thanks.
Now it’s off to bed. Just wrapped up an awesome Traffic Formula 2.0 lesson from my good friend Brian Fanale…Can’t wait to jump in and implement this info. Way too cool!

Very handy info, as always, Jason!
For screen shots, I use a program called Jing. It’s very easy to use and give you options for how you’d like to use your screen capture.
Thanks for the useful information!

I forgot all about Jing. But I didn’t
realize you could use it for screenshots too.
Very cool.

Jason,
I am new to WordPress and I am in charge of a WordPress blog site. I was wondering..how do you set up WordPress to have opt-in fields at the end of each of your posts? If you could provide any information, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Hey Ryan,
No problem. All you have to do is
copy and paste your autoresponder code
into the body of your blog post.
Most autoresponders let you generate forms
free of charge… then you just copy and
paste the code from their site to where you
want it.
Although if something went wrong with the
code… I seriously wouldn’t know what to do.
Forms are a little outta my league.
But… hope that helps you out.

Thank you for your help! So far it looks manageable, if I have any further questions I will post.
It is great that you take the time to assist those in need.

Jason,
I was wondering what widget you use that displays your “share post” the way it does after every post? The one that I have is not so easy on the eyes… I was looking for something that showed icons..
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ryan

I think it’s a plug-in calles Sociable you’re looking
for. Let me know how it works. I checked… and that
seems to be the one I have activated here.
Hope that helps.

Jason,
I have another question
. How do I go about creating an attractive opt-in similar to the one found on the top right-hand side of your site? I am not asking for an exact copy, just how can I creatively create and import one onto a blog-site? Thank you for all of your assistance, which has been big for myself and my employer!

Hey Ryan
Welcome back.
A lot of people have asked about that. I
wish I had an easy answer but the truth is
your designer will take care of any visual details.
If you’re on a strict budget then you’ll most likely
have to deal with a “plain jane” ordinary opt-in box.
There may be widgets out there that I’m not
familiar with… but unfortunately… for some things
you do have to find a designer.
Many of these resources are shared in Traffic Formula 2.0
which is probably the best way to get up and running
online… at least in my opinion.

Thank you for the response. I guess I picked a popular question? Well, thank you for your advice. I will have to look into that.
Thanks!

Hey Ryan,
Yes. But it shows you’re on the right
track. Great minds think alike. Still.
With some things the answer isn’t easy.
With some things like design… the answer
is often spending a little bit of money on
someone who can do it faster than you can.
And thank you for asking. Keep on rocking.

You have to express more your opinion to attract more readers, because just a video or plain text without any personal approach is not that valuable. But it is just form my point of view

The name of a similar wordpress template.

As always a tutorial with coffee is the best tasting blog in the morning.
If you looking for ideas I sooo want to know how you get that Rockin opt-in form looking the way you do. I tried an opt-in form wp plug-in and ick.. not as pretty as yours…

Haha…
Hey Rebecca,
Yep, that would make a great topic. Till
then… there’s loads of designers out there
and I would stay away from the wordpress plugin
in favor of a paid autoresponder… at least until
more people have been guinea pigs. Hehe.
