How To Write SEO Headlines With Heart…

SEO HeadlinesToday I have a confession. You see, my headlines on this blog have been suffering from SEO FLU. It’s when SEO takes over like a virus and eats up all your headlines. Because I’ve been thinking so hard about search engine optimization I lost sight of what really matters.

Which is… the personal touch, the human heart and most important of all… readers like YOU.

And I’m truly sorry if my headlines had the sniffles lately. If they sound like a robot wrote them it’s because they were written for Google robots. :-(

Which is great, unless you take it to extremes…

Then it gets a little silly… you know… MLM this… Network Marketing that… Jason Better this… Jason Better that… eventually you have to pull back a little and ask yourself what you’re trying to accomplish.

In the end… at least for me… it’s about making YOU happy… not the Google spiders. But we do have to strike a sorta balance here. So here’s a few quick tips.

How To Write SEO Headlines With Heart:

• The first few words are crucial. Try to make them describe the content as accurately as possible. This helps your readers and SEO at the same time.

• Make sure it makes sense. If it takes a robot to read it then it’s probably a horrible headline. Scrap it and go for a more human approach.

• Keep an eye on your posts. If you see that you’re repeating yourself… stop in your tracks. Yes, I’m guilty as charged. Just look at this week’s headlines and you can tell I went off track. Wow… you never see these things till they creep up on you.

(Update: Since I first drafted this post I’ve actually updated a few headlines. But there’s still a few lying around that you can tell were written with only SEO in mind.)

• When in doubt, use your heart. In the end it’s all about people. So writing headlines exclusively for SEO purposes is kind of a losing strategy from day one. I’ve never been a huge fan of super-optimized headlines and neither are most readers.

I’m not putting down SEO.

It’s absolutely crucial to your success online… but it’s kinda like when kids go out on Halloween… they bring back a garbage bag of candy and then wonder why they get sick. Too much of anything good is a bad thing.

So that’s worth keeping in mind.

And if you’re looking for the wizards of SEO. You really need to check out Raymond Fong and Ferny Ceballos on Better Networker. Those guys rock.

They’re so good they make me look bad.
