Why The “Whole World” Hates Multi-Level Marketers
Have you ever wondered why you get such a frosty reception when you tell people you’re in Network Marketing or Multi-Level Marketing?
Well I’m going to tell you why.
You see, I’m going to tell you some things you already know, some things that will make you raging mad, and some things that make you laugh a little too. So read on.
Because Here’s what “the world” thinks about us…
Why “Whole World” Hates Multi-Level Marketers…
- They have a secret “hit list” of friends and family members.
- They violate cars with fliers that look like parking tickets.
- They’re like mosquitoes but it’s illegal to kill them.
- They try to convince their friends to join their “cult”.
- They creep strangers out by smiling too much.
- They’re always looking for “quick and easy” money.
- They’re always promoting the next “BIG” event.
- They LIE about their income or dodge the question entirely.
- They read the labels on everything so they can SELL it better.
- They sound like walkin’ talkin’ “Billy Mays” INFOMERCIALS.
- They promote the “best opportunity” today – switch tomorrow.
- They SPAM people with links – e-books – and videos.
- They live off nutrition bars and bottles of vitamins.
- They throw a lot of “parties” but they’re never any fun.
- They’re always trying to get you in a “Three Way”.
- They drink unicorn tears and eat babies.
O.K., that last one was a little over the top but if you’ve ever picked up that phone or posted flyers anywhere then you know it’s not that far from the truth.
Let’s face it, a lot of people have a completely irrational view of what Multi-Level Marketing really is, but we don’t help our case by doing some of the things that we do.
I hope you had a good laugh today, but take a minute to look at what you’re doing in your own business. You might be creeping people out with that “movie star” smile of yours.
To your success,
-Jason The “Better Networker”
-The Jason Better Blog
P.S. Spread The Love: If you chuckled even once then spread the smiles by “Retweeting” or “Sharing” this post with your friends. The buttons are on the top of this post. And it’s definitely appreciated.

Jason,
The whole world is nuts. There have been a few shady companies and characters that have shed a bad light on the industry. Plus, a ton of people got in the industry and never put in the work to be successful, thus the concepts don’t work.

I here it all the time working my warm market around here in Abalama or however you spell J/K. Part of the problem here is people still don’t where shoes

Hey J
Ha, yeh I had a good laugh. Unicorn tears, classic!
It is easy to see why we get ‘hated’ on so much.
But we can change people’s perception. It will take a while but it is possible.
We can show people what being a real MLMer is all about. You are already doing a great job with your blog. BN is doing a great job with the MLM community. There is a good group of us also doing our bit.
If we keep showing people the right way, eventually the ‘baby eaters’ will be a thing of the past.

Hey Dwayne,
You are absolutely right. We can change people’s perception. People need to be educated about what network marketing or MLM really is.
They need to have all the facts to make an educated decision. I always say, …”You can’t see the whole picture holding just one piece of the puzzle.”
I totally changed once I “understood” network marketing.

Very true,
And that’s the big idea behind Better Networker too. A community of Network Marketers doing the right thing and making the world a better place for Network Marketers.
Not to mention, the millions of people we help as Network Marketers. Especially the way the economy is right now.
So many people are looking for a business they can trust.

My favorite (being that I am a hairdresser) is having another marketer sit in my chair… pestering me to approach my other customer who is sitting there as their color is processing.
This one time in particular… this marketer was getter her hair cut, my other customer was reading a magazine and this marketer starts loudly whispering … HEY Rebbecca! you should sign up that person.. what is she into?.. figure out what she wants and then sell her my stuff.. who else is coming in today.. I could approach all of your customers for you.. Just think you could make $3.00 for doing nothing. (ummm nope)

Hey Jason,
That’s too funny! But when I first got introduced to this industry those were exactly my thoughts.
My husband actually was the one that started in network marketing in the early 90’s and at one point I told him, “If you ever get involved in one of those ‘things’ again, I’ll leave you.”
Trust me, I was dead serious.
Then I got some education and I found out, that this is the most brilliant business model out there, where the average person has an equal chance for success.
I never looked back.
Thanks for making me laugh and for realizing (all over again) what I actually have my hands on!

I will for sure,
Like any industry we have scammers.
Just the other day I was hearing a story about a mortician who wasn’t even burying the bodies that came to his funeral home.
Another acquaintance of mine went to a lawyer, they took his ten thousand dollars, then denied it ever happened. So I’m worried about every industry. It’s definitely not a problem unique to us alone.

Jason,
I can see why people think of us this way.
Most companies tell you to focus on your “warm list” which is of course friends and family.
Most people don’t know how to market, therefore, we look like idiots to our warm market in the beginning.
ALOT of people recruiting don’t know how to properly train their downline so it’s like people are on the show “Survivor”
Therefore from an outsiders view, yep we look like a bunch of freaks.
Thanks for the laugh!

Hey Jason,
A lot of people definitely think of negative things when Network Marketing or MLM comes up.
When I started selling real estate I learned ‘A happy customer will tell 1 person about their good experience while an unhappy customer will tell 100 about a bad one’.
When people get into this business with the thought of getting rich quick with little to no work, it’s no wonder their experience is an unhappy one.
That creates a lot of uneducated bad-mouthers setting a bad tone. Luckily, these people are not our target market.
You can’t make everyone happy…

Your comment about them not being in your target market is spot on.
If somebody has a negative opinion about MLM it’s almost impossible to shake.
But a lot of people are surprisingly open minded.

Eric you make some excellent points there!
The shady companies and people definatly have not helped the situation.
And yes, when someone’s Uncle Bob got involved and didn’t put in the effort and failed, it wasn’t Uncle Bob’s fault. It was MLM’s fault.
I also think alot of people think it is a pyramid scheme due to the fact when you recruit people under you, it does sometimes in fact look like the shape of a pyramid depending on the compensation structure. When in fact, it’s not a pyramid scheme at all. (Thanks Bernie M. for reminding everyone of that)! Therefore, when someone asks you if it is one of those pyramid schemes, we need to ask them to clarify what they mean by that, so we as Network Marketer’s know how to address that answer.

First off, I love the friendly competition. You guys and gals are hilarious.
Now Jason, about the unicorn thing, do you have something against unicorns? I used to be an avid collector. Actually I still display some of the more valuable ones. It still is funny though
I truly believe the reason most people run is because everyone gets involved in network marketing/mlm and tries to be someone else. We’re not supposed to be someone else. We’re supposed to be ourselves. This is what attracts other like-minded people. We’re not going to attract them all and we don’t want to. The great thing about this business is we get to pick and choose who we want to work with.
Most people are just looking for someone who will actually care about their success and that they’re not just another number. The recruiting hundreds per month thing is for the birds. How can you possibly work with even 25-50 in a month? It would be like a college class and you are not going to get the one on one attention that you deserve. Eventually when you become “attractive”, the only thing you have to fall back on is that you trained the few properly and they continue to duplicate your training so there is always an endless supply of caring trainers.
Hey maybe I should put this into article format. LOL

I think, in general, people think Network Marketing is one big pyramid scam but if you really think about it “their” 9-5 job is a PYRAMID SCAM. They’re doing all the work and the big guy on top makes all the money.
I borrowed this quote from an mlm forum. I edited out the company’s name for privacy’s sake:

3. ** is the preferred reseller of **. In two years they’re the number 1 reseller of Carnival cruises.
4. I just got a discount and upgrade on my trip to New York.
5. I’m going on a trip with them in June.
6. There are many travel agents involved in **. In fact, one of the members of my upline used to be an on land travel agent.
7. You’re not a travel agent because you pay 399. You still have to take your test that ** trains you to take.
8. The founders of this company put 4.6 million dollars back into developing its technology last year. They’re putting 15 million back into the company over the next three years.
9. ** has been featured in two magazines: Your Business at Home (June, 2007), and Success From Home (May, 2008. hits bookstores April 15th).
10. Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki endorse Network Marketing in WRITING, in their book “Why We Want you to be Rich.”
You know what a Pyramid scheme means?
The person at the top makes all the money, and the people at the bottom work their butt off and never see a piece of the pie. That’s your 9-5 job.
In MLM, there’s room at the top, and everybody starts at the bottom.
He he
I also think that people have this pre-conceived prejudice against starting a business/network marketing business in general. They’ll say, “oh, that seems risky” or insert other excuse you’ve heard here. If anything, I think having a job, especially the state of things right now, is risky. The news has been grim and I think we need to re-built things from the ground up, for this will ensure the future and prosperity of our country.

Great stuff. First visit here, and it’s nice seeing some familiar faces.
I’m actually finding a lot of people (mostly younger) that are not at all familiar with the terms MLM or network marketing. That’s refreshing to me.
It makes it even more important to make a good impression so as not to give them the wrong impression.
Sadly what I find with unskilled network marketers, and any sales person or marketer without experience, is the sense of desperation. I saw it often in a previous life (LOL) when I sold insurance. The unskilled don’t have the skills yet, and they think that badgering and over talking will bring about the desired outcome. Usually not the case.
Take time to learn the skills and be patient. Become a professional.
The greatest advice for me in sales and marketing is learning to ask good questions. Particularly open ended questions. You have to uncover a need before trying to fill it.
Great stuff….
Remember….take it slow.

Hi Jason,
A lot of Network Marketers would agree that they hate Spam. When they go to promote their business they do a lot of spam like advertising.
For Exmaple:
1 Flyers on Car Windshields
2 They change every conversation into a Network Marketing Pitch
If you want to have success you need to actually help peoples lives in some form or another.

Hey Jason,
That is some funny stuff you have there! Before I got involved with MLM. I used to think the same as you outlined. But once I really knew the business and how to market…Wow! that is all I can say.
Have a great day my friend…

Damnit Josh,
I was really sitting on this today. You are like one of those Ebay guys waiting for the very last second.
Guess I’ll have to remain the Comment Ninja -in – waiting.

I hate E-bay ninjas… I’ve lost to them before.

You should try it with my connection. I bet they laugh at me as the satellite orbits the earth three times before my click goes through.

I believe it,
Around here, my net connection gets slow around 4:00.
I guess all the kids get off school or something then spend the next hour on Facebook playing Farmville or Mafiawars… or whatever they do online. Some days it’s almost impossible to load a website at that time… and I have highspeed… thinking of going with cable internet… or whatever it’s called.

The comment ninja is first again.
Good day Josh,
I think it’s hilarious what people will say about network marketing even when they know nothing about it at all.

Darn! I was right behind you this morning, but then took too long to write my ‘novel’ so Eric and Dwayne beat me
Got to put my running shoes on tomorrow.
You all have a great day!

That’s a good one Jason!
And Twila, you may be right too. We’ll never know though because I don’t think he’s ever going to reveal his secret.

Now this has to be the funniest comment post in JB’s history. I’m laughing so much that I just choke up on a Cheetos!
This is so cool. I just been upgraded from a sneaky ninja to Batman.
Hey Eric, there is a spot open for you buddy!
