11 Easy Ways To Build Backlinks
Hey, here’s how to weave a “web of links” that will automatically attract more traffic to your blog – using the hidden power of backlinks.
“What are backlinks and why do I care?”
Simply put, backlinks are links that lead back to your website.
The more backlinks you have, the more popular you are, the more web traffic you get, and the more Google loves you.
Sometimes they’re called “incoming links” or “inbound links”.
If you think of your blog or “nerve center” as a spider then your backlinks are the threads of your web. And visitors are juicy flies waiting to be devoured.
O.K., that went to far. Anyway…
Here’s 11 Easy Ways To Build Your Backlinks
- Comments - You don’t have to spam.
- Forums - Put your links in your signature file.
- Twitter – Share some of your links on Twitter.
- Facebook - Link back to your site from Facebook.
- Bookmarking - Start social bookmarking on StumbleUpon.com, reddit.com, del.icio.us, or Propeller.com. Whichever sites fit your category.
- Directories - Submit your site to popular directories like dmoz.org . Avoid directories that charge you for their services. They’re usually not worth the trouble.
- Links - Swap links with other bloggers
- Articles - When you write articles link back to your site.
- Video - When you post videos link back to your site.
- Content - Create content that people actually want to link to.
- Ask - Ask people to link back to your site.
A Strategy So Simple It’s Stupid…
If you link back to your site an average ten times a day for the next five years you’ll have 18250 links leading back to your website.
I’m not even counting the number of times people will link to your site on their own.
Now, imagine how much web traffic that would drive to your blog.
It’s not even sane.
Sure, some links will disappear over time. Some links get thousands of visits while other get zip.
But realistically you could expect more web traffic every single month.
And you can do this in two 10 minute breaks a day:
- Reply to 3 forum posts.
- Comment on 3 blogs.
- Write 3 tweets.
- Put a link in 1 article.
- Done.
The problem is, most people don’t have it in them to do this every day.
They’re sprinters not marathon runners.
When you know this, it’s easy to dominate the competition.
Now, if you’re wondering how important backlinks and comments are then here’s the facts…
After visiting www.jasonbetter.com:
4.08% of my traffic visits joshgarcia.com
2.77% of my traffic visits drivetheline.com
1.96% of my traffic visits waynevassell.com
Yep that’s right, every time I write an article or e-mail I’m actually driving loads of free web traffic to the top 2-3 comments on this blog.
You’re “hijacking” 4% my web traffic, blood, sweat, and tears…
That’s like being forced to give 4% of your income to every person who says:
“Hey, how you doing?”
Another good reason to leave your two cents today.
See you soon,
-Jason The “Better Networker”
-The Jason Better Blog

P.S. One more tip: Did you know that every time somebody “retweets” a blog post they’re building your backlinks? Yep, it’s another reason why your Twitter “retweets” and Facebook “shares” are a vital part of your traffic strategy.

Very cool that you listed all those above.
Of course….good luck getting your blog listed with DMOZ…… the wait is months and months, and they are very selective in who they actually list.
It IS funny you mention about blog commenting, as so many people worry about if a blog comment is “do follow” or “no follow”, and they fail to forget that comments (when adding value to the blog posts) can drive quite a bit of direct traffic back to your site.
Let me add one other that people rarely use for links….guest blogging.
There are people out there who are just starving for content.
Offer to write a unique article for them of the subject of their choosing, with the agreement that you get a link in a resource box back to your blog…..even better with anchor text.

Hey Kurt,
Awesome tip.
Guest blogging is also good for your credibility too. If you get featured on a top marketer’s website your name is as good as gold in some circles.
Interesting point about dmoz.org too.
I thought it was just me, but there’s entire lists of free directories too… if somebody really wants to ramp things
up… I definitely wouldn’t pay for listings though. Not without really good reason and some traffic data to back up the investment.

Hey Harold,
Nice site. You’re right about the backlinks. It could have a major impact on your web traffic.
Just a few ideas…
You would get even better results if you treat this site the same you you treat your own page too.
Sometimes simple is best. A big concern is that when people go to most of these sites they get lost and never take action because of that.

Hey, Jason!
Just a short comment –
from an purely SEO perspective.
Hope you don’t mind but I have some objections concerning the effectiveness of some link sources, namely:
# Comments # Forums # Twitter # Facebook.
These are all genuine nofollow links so your site’s link popularity won’t benefit from them. I know, you could argue that Yahoo and MSN are starting to disregard nofollow attribute, but the big daddy Google isn’t – at least not so often as we would need it
.
Cheers,
Cristian

Jason Reply:
March 15th, 2010 at 3:02 pm
Hey Cristian,
Definitely understand the nofollow drawbacks from an SEO perspective.
But I think what people miss is the cumulative effects of having loads of links out there.
I mean, look at Josh Garcia pulling 4% of the traffic that leaves this site here! Crazy.
Let’s say you have a link on a site where the nofollow attribute applies. It wouldn’t matter if you were still getting visitors to your site years after the fact because you were one of the top comments on a popular article.
Very true though, it’s something to keep in mind when you’re spreading your links around. It’s awesome that you took the time to bring this up.

Hey Jason,
One thing that I do with all of my backlinking is point the links towards a blog post or piece of content on my blog. A lot of people struggle with SEO because they are trying to get brand new blogs ranking (not gonna happen). Instead, point your links back to content on your site instead of just the homepage. I have had blog posts that I linked back to rank in less than a week on page 1 of the Oogle, sometimes less than a day. Over time, the main blog with gain authority and will start ranking, but it won’t happen immediately with a brand new site.
Good Stuff, I think I do all of those things plus,

Hey J
I have been learning little by little how to drive traffic to my blog. My blog was able jump up in ranking by a couple “million” spots in less than two weeks according to Alexa. I found some great tips online and have been using every method you mentioned. My favorites are commenting on other blogs & commenting in forums. The amount of traffic can be insane especially if your comments hold value.
Here is a small piece of advice to all if you are commenting in the same forum. This is to avoid having the post flagged. On some forums if they see your link more than once they may flag your post but what I like to do is only use the same link once. If I answer someone’s question I may use tommydipietro.com/the-main-event/ and on another question I would us this link tommydipietro.com/how-about-them-apples/.
The best part of commenting on other blogs are the relationships we are building with other network marketers. You are meeting new people that share a common interest and this can lead to a partnership in the future.

Hi Jason, I’m pretty new to your blog & blogging in general & already I see the value. I’m adding my 2 cents & thanking you because you let me know I’m on the right track. I have a daily to do list that includes commenting on 3 fashion blogs a day, when I tweet,I actually do something where I say I’m catching up on what happened while I was asleep and will give little blurbs of what others tweeted through the night to my followers as well as adding my own links occasionally hopefully my sharing others info, eventually they will share mine too. I have yet to write articles but will start soon & I never thought much about forums until your post. Thanks so much for expanding my blogging knowledge. Have a great day!

No problem Kellie,
Marketing is marketing. You’ll find that the more you share other people’s content… especially if they’re in the same market… the better your results will be. Some people drive nearly all their traffic on product reviews, in video, articles, and even Tweets.

Great post, Jason! Here are two more ways to build backlinks and more Google love that I’m sure you probably know.
1) Every time you make a comment on a blog before you leave, bookmark it. If you use Sharaholic, it is real easy. This helps you AND the blog you are bookmarking.
2) When you get trackbacks to your blog, go visit the trackback site. It should have your article or blog post staring you in the face. Bookmark it. Again, Sharaholic makes this easy.
You are right Jason, most people won’t take the time to do this. It is like The Slight Edge teaches, “it’s easy to make a bookmark! and it is real easy not to make another bookmark.” It’s the little, sometimes mundane things that we do day in and day out that spell success.

Hey Stephen,
Totally agree.
Sweet tips too.
I like the trackback one… never would have thought of that.
I need to do more bookmarking.

You’ll noticed a lot more after a while to. It’s almost like the miracle of compound traffic or something.

Thank for writing this. I really am starting from tomorrow to make at least 20 backlinks a day.
I have a question: what do you do when you are a developer and all your projects need backlinks?
You do this for every project you make, every day?
Or you just hire someone to to this for you?
Thanks
