Nerve Center Silos: “What’s a ’silo’ and how do I use them for SEO?”

SEO Silo Structure For Network Marketing BloggersWhen it boils down you basically have three choices for pure web traffic. There’s PPC, SEO, or Social Media. Sure, there’s a few other options, but those are the big players. Not to be confused with content marketing, like videos, articles, and blogs. Which thrive on traffic from the above.

So today, over a cuppa morning coffee, I thought I’d share a little something I’ve learned about SEO. Now, Raymond Fong and Ferny Ceballos are really the guys you want to look up to for network marketing SEO. This is just a little trick I’ve picked up a few days ago that you can use right now to get more web traffic and make your website easier to navigate.

It’s Called Silo Structure…

As you probably noticed, there’s been a subtle change to the Jason Better blog lately. Near the top of the page there’s little links. Here, I’ll take a screen shot so you see what I mean.

SEO silo structure

You see the little links like copywriting, MLM Training, And Network Marketing? Those are what SEO peeps call “silos”. You can think of them like silos on farms. You know those big cylinders that hold grain? Well, that’s kinda what you want to do with your articles, blog posts, and links. And they help you in more ways than one.

Here’s why…

• Google loves it when you group related themes. In fact, some SEO people call this technique “theming”.

• It gives you handy pages to send your web traffic too. Instead of sending traffic to random blog posts. You can send them to your silo pages.

• It really helps your readers find what they’re looking for on your blog so they can read and share your content with the world.

• And more…

Of course, there’s more to it than piling up a buncha links and praying to the Google spiders. You can get right into details by naming your posts according to keywords and playing around with your link architecture for hours. But you don’t have to know everything about SEO to get started. I sure don’t, I learn from Ray and Ferny.

How To Get Started With Silo Structure

1) Add pages to your blog with headlines that reflect your key words. By “keywords” I mean the words you want Google to rank your pages for. Like if you’re into MLM Coaching… you might have a page titled “MLM Coaching”. I think that’s pretty self explanatory.

2)
Start posting your links into these pages in a logical order. You might even have sub-categories on your silo pages. So your “MLM Copywriting” page could divide into “MLM Article Writing” and “MLM Blogging”. As long as it makes sense.

Eventually, as your blog grows, these “themes” could even have their own silo pages. But no point in doing that for an article or two.

3) Write a generic description of the content on your silo pages. You might be tempted to ignore this but you have to think of your readers. If you’re sending them to your silo pages instead of your home page they might be a little confused.

Besides, you can use this as a chance to plug-in a few extra keywords too. Just make sure you’re writing for human beings and the Google monkeys at the same time.

4) Keep updating your silos. Everytime you write a new blog post, feel free to add it to your silo page for that key word. Try to sculpt your headlines for both SEO and readership too.

The Shotgun Effect

Understand that your silo pages can almost have a shotgun effect. So you don’t want to keep repeating MLM, MLM, MLM as your keyword. What you do want to do is get down to specific keywords like MLM SEO, MLM Coaching, and so on.

It helps if you switch things up a bit. Both for your readers and Google. You’re striving for balance. And it’s going to be a constant battle between hammering specific keywords without being a selfish bore.

Digging Deeper

There’s really a lot more to know about site structure for search engine optimization but these are the basics of silo structure.

I’m sure a few pros are shaking their heads because there’s loads more to SEO than meets the eye, but I just wanted to share this with you because I think it’s something everyone with a blog can do right now to improve their site ranking.

Was it useful?

Anyway, I hope these tips help you get a little more traffic and make things easier for your subscribers too. I’ll be posting more little tips and SEO tricks as I learn them.

And I’d like to hear yours too if you get a chance. :-)

To your success
